Support care that reaches those who need it most
Leonard Hospital began as a simple dispensary in 1958 and grew from there to a forty-bed hospital. With the help of two organisations in Germany — Misereor and the Komitee of Doctors — in the 1970s Leonard Hospital expanded to a two-hundred-bed facility.
Although personal and mission relationships remain, after twenty-five years of support these esteemed organisations expressed their inability to continue large-scale financial funding. Through their far-sighted and sacrificial support, Leonard Hospital is now a 55,716 sq ft facility plus grounds. Needs continue to grow with the population and with increasing medical sophistication in equipment and techniques.
Equipment
Contributions are invited for equipment that reduces hardship for patients who would otherwise travel long distances for care:
- Kidney Dialysis Units — for patients who face difficult bus journeys to Madurai and back
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facility
- Cath lab
- Heart-lung machine
- Other equipment to support our multi-specialty infrastructure
Personnel
Leonard Hospital welcomes medical staff interested in serving the disadvantaged.
- Doctors, nurses and practitioners with direct patient contact should be conversant in some Tamil
- Surgeons visiting for specific operations can rely on our Tamil/English-speaking staff for preparatory work and translation
- We also welcome physiotherapists, pharmacists, and laboratory / X-ray / CT technicians
Funding
Leonard Hospital functions largely with income from nominal patient charges. Deserving cases are treated for free; others receive a percentage discount. Receipts just cover maintenance, equipment, medicines and salaries. With additional income we could give deeper discounts and expand facilities.
We seek major funding for our next goal: building on the Claudine School of Nursing (Diploma) to develop a full-fledged College of Nursing (BSc / MSc). Our Nursing Education Project has already improved care quality and given disadvantaged young women a better future. We encourage donors to help us take the next step toward independent facilities for Claudine College of Nursing.
“
Healing power is working in Leonard Hospital. This is why we want to build it up more and more, and for this nothing should be an obstruction.
